Reading Curriculum

Reading Intent Statement

Reading is at the heart of our school. Our reading curriculum inspires curiosity, wonder and imagination through empowering our children with the essential knowledge and skills that they will need now and in their future.

Through well-chosen and vocabulary rich texts, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry, children have the opportunities to widen their understanding of the world they live in and the morals they need in order to thrive. All children will be encouraged to read widely to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum.

Our curriculum teaches core reading strategies through well planned and sequenced lessons which build on prior knowledge over time. Consequently, children’s confidence to discuss, debate and share opinions will flourish.

Phonics underpins the application and early development of sound reading skills. Therefore, it is taught in a structured and specific format enabling children to use and apply strategies across the curriculum.

Throughout our school, reading is at the heart of every environment. This encourages a passion for reading inside the classroom, at home and in the wider world. Our aim to instil confidence to allow our children to be limitless in their choices of text.

We want:

  • Curious readers who read widely and can speak with confidence about books they enjoy.
  • Skilled readers who use reading skills to underpin their understanding of all aspects of the curriculum.
  • Imaginative readers who use books to inspire understanding and progression of the world they live in.
  • Interested and imaginative readers who use and apply knowledge secured in their long term memory.
