Reading and Phonics

Children at our school love to read. We just can't stop!

Reading partners work with a reading buddy from a different year group, sharing and talking about favourite books.

Guided reading with teachers every day teaches the different aspects of reading in a structrued way.

Listening to stories read by adults, no matter how old we are, brings literature alive. We do it as often as we can!

Reading at home is VERY important. Enjoying books together is good fun and has a FANTASTIC impact on reading development. We encourage every child to read with someone at home.

Reading Schemes

We use Oxford Reading Tree and Big Cat schemes for our targetted reading books which are assessed at the child's level.

We also use Read, Write Inc. Project X for guided reading and for some targeted interventions.

Children can also borrow books from the library and these are often above or below their reading level as they are being taught how to select books and also to choose books which they will enjoy reading.

Children will often bring a lot of books home so make sure they read them and talk to you about them!

We use the Letters and Sounds Phonics scheme and incoroprate Jolly Phonics actions to learn the sounds.

We believe the key to good Phonics is good assessment and high quality teaching so children are assessed and put it the right group straight away. This allows children of all abilities to make excellent progress in their synthetic phonics.
